Sprint Cup Series – Past Seasons

The Sprint Cup Series is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. It was formerly known as the Strictly Stock Series (1949), Grand National Series (1950-1971), the Winston Cup Series (1972-2003), and the NEXTEL Cup Series (2004-2007).

2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series

2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season began on February 10, 2007 at Daytona International Speedway with the Budweiser Shootout and ended on November 18 of that same year at Homestead-Miami Speedway with the Ford 400. The Chase for the NEXTEL Cup began with the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. 2007 was the final year that the NASCAR Cup Series was known as the NEXTEL Cup Series.

2007 Chase for the Nextel Cup

The 2007 Chase for the NEXTEL Cup was the ten-race playoffs which concluded the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season. It began with the Sylvania 300 on September 16th, 2007 at New Hampshire International Speedway and ended with the Ford 400 on November 18th of the same year at Homestead-Miami Speedway, with Jimmie Johnson winning the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Championship.

2006 Chase for the Nextel Cup

The Chase for the NEXTEL Cup began with the Sylvania 300 on Sunday, September 17 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Tony Stewart, driver of the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet for Joe Gibbs Racing, was the defending series champion, but lost out in defending his championship this year, having finished outside of the top 10 in the points standings after the Chevy Rock and Roll 400. He did, however, claim a $1 million (US) bonus as the best finisher outside the Chase for the Nextel Cup drivers, winning three of the ten Chase races.

2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series

The 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup season began on Saturday, February 12. One of the biggest controversies prior to the start of the season involved the elimination of two races – Darlington and North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham. The eliminated Rockingham race ends NASCAR’s 38-year association with Rockingham. The races were replaced by new races at Texas and Phoenix.

2004 Chase for the Nextel Cup

This was the first season that NASCAR utilized the Chase for the Nextel Cup format that began with the Sylvania 300 on Sunday, September 19. Under the format rules, the top 10 drivers (and any additional drivers within 400 points of the leader) by the end of the 26th race would be eligible to compete in a final 10-race playoff to determine the NASCAR Nextel Cup champion.
